Shinisaurus crocodilurus is a rare and archaic lizard species, and the juvenile exhibits some characteristics that differ slightly from the adults. It is native to southern China and northern Vietnam.
Size: Juveniles are usually 15–20 cm long (including the tail).
Body type: Long, narrow body with a very thick, laterally compressed tail, reminiscent of a crocodile – characteristic of the species.
Head: Broad and slightly flattened, with pronounced bony scales.
Eyes: Large, adapted to low light.
Behavior:
Semi-aquatic species: spends a lot of time motionless on branches just above the water.
Juveniles are more nervous and sensitive to stress.
Excellent swimmers, immediately falling into the water when in danger.
Mainly diurnal, but with low activity.
Diet (young individuals): Carnivorous species. 3–4 meals/week for juveniles
Juveniles feed on: small insects (crickets, cockroaches), larvae, worms, small aquatic invertebrates.
