Meal Worm 100 gr
Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) are the larvae of a beetle and are a very common food for reptiles, birds, amphibians and small mammals. They are readily available, can be raised at home and are a good source of energy, but they require care in their use.
Characteristics
Species: Larva of the beetle Tenebrio molitor.
Size: 2–3 cm long when mature.
Life form: Live as larvae, then pupate and finally beetle.
Behavior: They are quite mobile, but not as attractive to prey as crickets.
Suitable for: Lizards (e.g. geckos, beardies as snacks), turtles, frogs, birds.
Usually used as a treat or supplement, not as a staple food.
The high fat content makes them good for animals that need energy, but if given frequently they can lead to obesity.
Gut-loading & Fortification
Mealworms can be fed with oats, wheat bran, corn and fortified with fresh vegetables/carrots to make them more nutritious.
As with crickets, before giving them to reptiles it is a good idea to sprinkle them with calcium + vitamins.
...More
Protein: ~18–20% (fresh weight).
Fat: High (13–15%).
Fiber: The chitin in the shell is indigestible, especially for small reptiles.
Calcium – Phosphorus: Very low Ca:P ratio (bad), so a calcium supplement is always needed.
Home Maintenance
Very easy to breed: in a container with bran/oats as a substrate and food.
Fruits/vegetables are needed for moisture (carrot, potato).
They can be kept for weeks in the refrigerator to slow down their metabolism.
Caution:
Hard chitin can cause indigestion if given in large quantities, especially to small or young reptiles.
It should not be the only food; variety is needed.
