Vietnamese Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus laoticus)
The species *Heterometrus laoticus* (commonly known as the Laotian Black Scorpion or Vietnamese Forest Scorpion) is an impressive, large-bodied scorpion belonging to the family Scorpionidae. It is quite popular as an exotic pet due to its relatively mild toxicity and ease of care. It features a deep black or dark brown coloration, a robust body, and large, powerful pincers (pedipalps). It can reach a final length of 12 to 13 centimeters. It is a nocturnal hunter. Although considered a social species capable of living in groups, it often displays aggression toward members of its own kind—with documented instances of cannibalism—making separate housing in captivity a frequent preference. Its sting has very low toxicity to humans (comparable to a bee sting), causing only localized pain and swelling. In fact, its venom is currently being studied for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. ...More
