It belongs to the family Testudinidae and is endemic to the Aldabra Islands of the Indian Ocean, which belong to the Seychelles. Aldabrachelys gigantea is an impressive reptile, known for its enormous size, its longevity and its slow, peaceful nature.

They are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, leaves, fruits and roots.
They prefer dry and semi-arid environments with shrubby or phrygian vegetation.
They live socially, often in groups, and display hierarchical behaviors between males.
